Commercial Insurance Agency

Karl Said:

I am inheriting an insurance agency one day and need advice on what to do!?

We Answered:

I'd take the time to learn about your commercial book and commercial insurance. There is a lot to learn but that is where you are going to make a ton of money. There are a lot of people that would love to be in your shoes. Take the time to learn. Hell you got your Dad right there as a good resource.

The best way to learn is to work for a carrier. At least that is what worked for me. But that shouldn't discourage you from picking up some books. Maybe try and get your CPCU or take the INS courses (they are a little easier). If you aren't familiar with that you can look on www.aicpcu.org.

Don't sell your book because you are too lazy to learn. It's not rocket science. As my friends and I usually tell each other when we get flustered, it's only insurance.

What is the average salary for an insurance agent working at an independent insurance agency?

We Answered:

What's your job? If it's customer service work, it's not going to drastically increase your pay right away - it can take years. MOST CSR jobs require a license, anyway. If it's producing, the norm is to go on a commisison split, with no salary.

www.salary.com - look it up in your area, for your experience and job title.

I am trying to purchase workmans comp insurance for the first time, for an Employment Agency estimates anyone?

We Answered:

OK, these are three different policies, you know? Liability is about $1500 for $50,000 in payroll - and that's the MINIMUM premium, so if your payroll goes up, pricing goes up, but pricing will probably never be below $1500.

Workers comp for janitoral - as in contractors (as opposed to building owner) - is about 22% of payroll. I have no idea what disability is, I've never had a business pay for disability coverage for janitors.

Obviously, you're going to have to contact a local agent to get a more specific quote.
