You have to get the insurance companies to sign you up.

You're not worth the bother unless you have a lot of business already. "Captive" insurance companies are wiling to develop an agent, because he's "locked in", and cannot sell insurance for another insurer. Independents are not.

You need to buy yourself into the business. In some cases, you can find a large P&C agency that will sell you some customers. Maybe they have 8 companies they sell for, and they will sell you all the customers for 1 company. Or you can find an agent that wants to retire, and buy him out completely.

Another alternative is to affiliate with an independent agent for a while. You sell P&C to his L&H customers, and sell P&C to your own customers. After a year or two, he keeps his customers and you keep yours. This can get sticky.

As you see, there's no *good* way to get into the business except to buy out a retiring agent.
