Business Insurance Public Liability

George Said:

What is the best busines insurance for Victorian Painters?

We Answered:

Public Liability is commonly referred to as General Liability in the insurance industry and covers for damage or injury arising from your "negligence". Workers Compensation is coverage for injury to your employees. These are the two most common coverages sought by small contractors. The companies/Policies I would recommend would differ based on your business and the state you work in.

However, just to give you a jumping off point, you may want to look into a Hartford BOP (Business Owners Policy). Hartford also writes Workers Compensation in most states. Beyond Hartford I would recommend SAFECO or Zurich depending once again on your state and your company makeup.

It would be wise to contact a local independent insurance agent (i.e. someone who represents multiple companies). Let them review your business and make recommendations as to which company to go with.

I hope this helps!

Rough cost for public liability, fire, and extended coverage insurance? Need to know by 5, and I've tried call?

We Answered:

Dude, it's going to depend on a whole bunch of factors that you didn't include - like location, protection class, construction, updates, protective devices, and occupancy.

What KIND of office? What other tenants are in there? What exactly do you do? What are your gross sales? You're looking at a range of $750 to $750,000, without a WHOLE BUNCH more information.

Photography Business insurance?

We Answered:

You should be able to purchase a Commercial Package policy which would include coverage for Commercial General Liability and your Business Personal Property (on an Inland Marine form if you don't have a studio). You would ask for them to cover your Business Personal Property on a replacement cost or Agreed Value Basis -- what you don't want is Actual Cash Value.

For additional information you should contact a local independent insurance agent that specializes in commercial insurance so that he or she can give you a full review of your operations and the risks that need to be covered. You can go to the Find an Agent section of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America website. This website will allow you to search for an agent in your community by entering your city, state and zip code which will then pull up the agents in your community, their contact information, website, specialties, qualifications and the companies they represent. The website will not store or forward any of your information nor does it request any of your personal information. The website is: http://www.iiaba.net/agentlocator/findag…

I hope this information helps. Good Luck

Public Liability insurance?

We Answered:

I admire your spirit...

However, in the UK at age 14 you can't enter into a contract, so as I think you've guessed you can't take out insurance.

The other side of that is that it's difficult to see how you could be sued, since there can't be any contract between you and anyone else. So as there's no contract, any damage you cause would be no different than if you kicked a ball through somebody's window. Your parents might be expected to pay up, but you can't really be sued.

To be honest, I expect the law would probably take the view that anyone who took the advice of a minor or allowed them to carry out work, did so at their own risk. They can make you give back any money you charged, but that's it.

Indeed, if I were to allow you to do any work on a PC at my house as an adult I'd probably be liable if you electrocuted yourself (I'm sure you wouldn't, but you get my point).

So I don't think insurance is the issue here, you might however want to see what the legal position is with regards to any liability falling on your parents.

Also please bear in mind that you'd pretty much have to tell people you were 14 otherwise you could leave yourself open to all sorts of legal trouble right up to possibly 'obtaining money under false pretences' if someone complained. OK, you probably wouldn't be charged, but you and especially your parents would probably get a stern lecture from police.

Another thing to bear in mind are the child labour laws, again your parents could find themselves in hot water if they allow you to work without a permit from the local education authority, for more than 2 hours a day or after 7pm (on a school day).

So I'd strongly suggest you get some legal advice (properly, not on here) before you go ahead.

That said, I really do wish you every success.

When owning a business, what insurances do you need, and what do they cover?

We Answered:

Employers liability is a legal requirement - if you have any employees then you have to have liability cover for them.
Public liability insurance isn't a legal requirement but it should be! This covers you for claims from customers and/or the public - don't consider trading without it as it could prove to be a very costly mistake for you.
A commercial (business) policy can include all the insurance cover that you need - employers liability, public liability, building cover, stock and contents cover, etc. Commercial policies are tailored to fit your business, so you can ask for any type of cover that you want and have it all included in one policy if you want to do it that way.

Zachary Said:

what is public liability insurance? where can i get one?

We Answered:

It is similar to general liability insurance. You can get a policy from most business insurance agents. Start with the insurance agents you know, like the agents you have your home and car insurance through, and see if they sell business insurance. The agent should be able to answer any questions you have regarding the permit requirement's for insurance.

Discuss It!
